London in den 50er Jahren: Die selbstlose Putz- und Hausfrau Vera Drake (Imelda Staunton) lebt mit ihrem Mann Stan (Phil Davis) und ihren zwei erwachsenen Kindern in einer kleinen Wohnung in einem Arbeiterviertel. Neben ihrem Beruf kümmert sie sich zusätzlich noch aufopferungsvoll um ihre Mutter und einen kranken Nachbarn. Obwohl die Familie nicht viel Geld hat und ein recht bescheidenes Leben führt, ist Vera jedoch durch und durch glücklich. Allerdings verheimlicht sie ihrer Familie, dass sie seit Jahren illegale Abtreibungen bei ungewollt schwangeren Frauen durchführt, um diesen zu helfen. Als es bei einer dieser Abtreibungen zu Komplikationen kommt und die Frau ins Krankenhaus eingeliefert werden muss, wird Vera von der Polizei verhaftet und vor Gericht gestellt
